CPS Unit No. 115, subunit 31, located at Northwestern Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, subjected CPS men to experiments studying the effects of diet-altitude.
Dr. Theodore E. Friedmann (Laboratory of the Abbott Fund) and Dr. A.C. Ivy directed this OSRD project studying the effects of diet on altitude tolerance. Beginning in September 1943 and concluding in April 1946, the study sponsored by the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Northwestern University Medical School worked with six to seven volunteers at a time. Under the oversight of the Brethren Service Committee, the men lived at the YMCA in Chicago while participating in the study.
