CPS Unit No. 115, subunit 28, located at the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, subjected CPS men to experiments studying the effects of high altitude/cold weather.
Dr. Robert W. Keeton and Dr. H. H. Mitchell directed this OSRD project examining the effect of diet on the ability to withstand rapid and intensive exposure to cold temperatures. Sponsored by the University of Illinois College of Medicine, the project worked with twenty-four men, who sat for hours in a cold chamber where temperatures dropped as low as 20 degrees F. Also called the Cold Research Project, it began in 1942 and concluded in 1944 with the Brethren Service Committee providing agency oversight.
