    9 C.O.’s are serving as ‘guinea pigs’ in experiments at the University of Minnesota to determine international standards regarding the minimum amount of vitamins necessary to sustain healthy adult life. Results should be valuable in making possible better use of available supplies, especially during the postwar period. Summary:

CPS Unit No. 115, subunit 18, located at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, subjected COs to experiments in thiamine/starvation.

 

Dr. Ancel Keys directed this OSRD thiamine/starvation project to check cerebral blood flow (?) as part of the Minnesota Experiment discussed in subunit 17.  The project sponsored by the Laboratory of Physical Hygiene at the University of Minnesota with oversight from the Brethren Service Committee, could accommodate up to forty men, drawn from the participating group of volunteers.
